Walking the site at six
The first visit to a site is always at dawn. It is the hour that tells you the most.

Before I draw anything I walk the site at six in the morning, again at noon and once at dusk.
Dawn tells you where the light arrives and how cold the ground is. Noon tells you where people will want shade. Dusk tells you what the place is like when no one is watching.
Three walks, one notebook — that is usually enough to begin.
